In The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, Christopher Marlowe demonstrates the conflicts between the irrecon- cilable values in Renaissance. And Doctor Faustus' s failure in redemption indicates the strength of the European witchcraft tradition in that period. In light of that tradition, this paper illustrates that his identity as a black witch is the cause of his failure in redemption and explores the anxiety of the humanistic intellectuals represented by Doctor Faustus, who, in spite of their pursuit of infinity and salience, were overwhelmed with anxiety as a result of the lost of control of their own desires and the failure in breakthrough of their own limitations in an era of dramatic social transition.
