The relationship between the microvessel density (MVD), the expression of vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) and the pathological types and clinical stages in gastric cancers was studied. The MVD and the expression of VEGF in the samples of gastric cancers were assayed by using immunohistochemical methods of SABC with human factor Ⅷ related antibody, the VEGF monocolonal antibody. The mean value of MVD and the positive rate of VEGF expression in gastric cancer were 31.4 ±14.3 and 53.3% (24/45) respec- tively, and the value of MVD in those with positive VEGF expression was markedly higher than that in those with negative VEGF expression (P<0.05). The value of MVD and the positive rate of VEGF expression were varied in different Borrmann types and TNM stages and were raised with the types and stages of gastric cancer improved (P<0.01 ). It was suggested that the MVD value in gastric carcinoma was closely related with the expression of VEGF and associated with the pathological types and clinical stages. Both of them could be used as the useful indexes reflecting the biological behavior of gastric carcinoma.
