摘　　要：《大陆报》是第一份由职业新闻记者而非商人或传教士在中国创办的专业美式报纸,它对近代中国新闻形态格局、对外传播及中美外交均产生重要影响,但新闻史研究对该报仅略有提及,系统研究尚付阙如,在办刊动机问题的认识上也存在偏差。本文在分析该报进入中国的历史建构的基础上,揭示出该报的酝酿、萌生背后复杂的时代背景、政治外交原因和密勒等人的主观努力。The China Press,a US-owned English-language newspaper in China,first appeared in Shanghai,on August23,1911.The newspaper had great influences on modern Chinese newspaper journalism,international communication as well as Sino-US diplomatic relations.However,there is not much research about the important roles The China Press had played and less was from comprehensive perspectives.There are even incorrect interpretations concerning such important issues as the motivations of founding that newspaper business.Therefore,after critical reviews of the historical background of the US-owned newspaper business in China,this study concludes that the founding of The China Press became a sign of changing eras and thus reflected how such 'actors' like Thomas Millard directly involved themselves in the purist of the best place for their own countries' benefits in international political economy.
