Using tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr. ) cultivar ' HuHong' as experimental materials, the contents of sugar component and photosynthesis in leaves and petals were determined at 5 developmental stages in order to discuss the transport mechanism of sugar component. The results showed that the content of glucose and fructose in leaves and petals ascended first and then descended, and the content of glucose and fructose :in leaves reached the maximum at flawing stage which were 44.63% and 49.06% higher than those at companula stage respectively; However, at blooming stage, those in petals reached the maximum which were 66.49% and 72.53% higher, content of glucose in petals was 27.64% higher than that in leaves. Sucrose content in leaves increased by 42.9% at flawing stage in contrast to that at companula stage, and this index reached its minimum ( decreased by 25.31% ) at blooming stage. At 5 developmental stages, sucrose content in petals increased gradually, but was lower than that in leaves. Starch content in leaves and petals appeared similar changing trend, which was higher in leaves than in petals. The photosynthetic rate in leaves reached the maximum at flawing stage, its changing trend similar to that of glucose and fructose. The changing trend of net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in leaves is similar to that of sucrose content in leaf, namely, the sucrose transforms from leaf to petal at full blooming stage in order to provide energy for flowering.
