In the history of aesthetic culture, romanticism has been a concept from the past. The romantic elements were inherent existence of the medieval culture, yet in essence romanticism can only be characteristic of the modern aesthet- ic culture. With individualism, sentiment, sensuality, freedom, and public carnival, romanticism differs from medieval culture characterized by nobility or aristocracy, arbitrary unity, asceticism, and dogmatism. Romanticism in the modern aesthetic culture is the generalized version of romanticism. All sorts of irrational, meaningless, arrogant, and ignorant ele- ments of the 20th century aestheticism marked the deconstruction of the aesthetic tradition with romanticism as its core, and was the necessary outcome of the internal crisis of entire modern society. Only when the whole process of modernity moves into the stage of healthy and sustainable development, the romantic flower that nourish the human soul with beauty may come to full blossom.
