This paper probes into Joseph Conrad’s novella HeartofDarknessfrom the perspective of sea literature. It claims that HeartofDarknessepitomizes all sea literature texts in the British sea literature system, and that HeartofDarkness, by virtue of the meticulous and poignant description of the Europeans’ colonization in African Congo, imposes a prominent revelation of the role that sea has played in colonization. This role is incorporated in, at least, two aspects. On the one hand, when “we”, as Marlow’s audience, evoke the great spirit of the past upon the lower reaches of the Thames, that past reveals the vital role that sea once played in British expansion and also preinstalls the theme of Marlow’s narrative of Africa. On the other hand, tragic encounters in the Thames and the Congo River in the history, which are echoing and contrasting each other in the novella, are to enhance the presentation of the theme. This theme, this paper suggests, has something to do with the relationship between sea and colonial expansion.
