One of the legacies James Fennimore Cooper left in American literature and culture is the landscape described in his novels. His panoramic and picturesque depiction of the sceneries in American frontiers has been impressive and received positive remarks. However, there is less discussion on the politics behind the landscape description. In view of the latest development in landscape research, this paper intends to explore the significance of Cooper's landscape in building the American national consciousness and identity and its significance in the representation of American national spirit and character. The paper argues that as symbolic landscape,Copper's sceneries have become the source of collective memory and the expression of American image.
