The application of numbers fell into two broad categories in ancient China, including numbers employed in Xiang-Shu thought and those used in mathematics. Instead of being used for computation, numbers in Xiang-Shu thought are a kind of symbols which are a reflection of qualitative characteristics other than quantitive features of the objective world. Therefore, the sharp distinctions between numbers in Xiang-Shu thought and those in mathematics should always be kept in mind while analyzing specific questions since the thought of absorbing symbols and taking numbers is frequently applied in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and numbers in Xiang-Shu thought exist either evidently or snugly in many aspects of the academic system of TCM.
