Objective To observe the posttrauma-response heterogeneity between the C57BL/6 and BALB/C inbred mice. Methods The C57BL/6 and BALB/C inbred mice were injured by the same blast wave, and the mortality rates of both strains were analyzed at the points of 0, 1, 6, 24 and 72 hours after injury. The pathomorphological changes of both strains in the lung tissues were compared with each other. Results There were significant differences of the mortality rates and the severity of lung injury between the C57BL/6 and BALB/C inbred mice within 72 hours after blast injury. The C57BL/6 mice showed greater ability of resistance to the blast injury, and had milder lung injuries than the BALB/C mice. However, no significant difference of the mortality rate and the severity of lung injury was observed between the male and the female mice of both strains. Furthermore, we discovered that death of the mice almost occurred within 6 hours after blast injury. Conclusions There is significant heterogeneity of posttrauma-response between the C57BL/6 and BALB/C mice, which may be induced by the differences of their genetic background.
