Objective The effects of low level lead exposure on learning and memory of rats in different stages of brain development were investigated. Methods From the 14th day of gestation to the 21th day after birth, the rats were given lead exposure in different stages. The pups' development and growth conditions were researched. From the 21th day after birth, Water-maze test and Step-down test were carried out. Results The pups' weights of group C at the 28th day and the 40th day after birth were lower than those of other groups. Water-maze test:the incubation periods of the second and the fourth day of control group were decreased more than 50 percent, and the error times of the second day were fewer than those of other groups ( P<0.05 ). Step-down test:on the second day, the error times of control group were significantly fewer than those of group C, and the incubation period was significantly shorter than that of other groups ( P<0.05) . Conclusion These results indicated that low level lead exposure during different stages of brain developmetn of rats could damage their learning and memory, but the rats 1-10 days old seemed more sensitive to lead neurotoxicity.
