Hydrophobically associating water soluble polymers (HAWSPs) are novel promising hydrosoluble materials for petroleum recovery. They possess the characteristics of strong viscosification, insensitive mechanical degradation, heat resistance and salt tolerance. This research focused on the comparative charaterization of the structures in hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide (HAPAM) and ultrahigh molecular weight partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HWHPAM) in aqueous solution by means of rheometry, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and environmental scanning electronic microscopy (ESEM). The results indicated that the viscosifying ability of HAPAM is much stronger than that of HWHPAM. Visual observations from SEM and ESEM confirmed the formation of three dimensional structures of HAPAM in aqueous solution, which resulted in a dramatic increase in polymer solution viscosity of HAPAM. Self similarity obtained from different polymer concentration via different amplifications of SEM and ESEM observations is an indication of fractal characteristics for the structure of hydrophobically associating water soluble polymers in aqueous media.theviscosifyingabilityofHAPAMis
