Objective To investigate the neuroprotective effects of mild hypothermia plus Astrsgalus in the cerebral middle artery occlusion in rat. Methods All SD rats underwent 6 hours of middle artery occlusion followed by reperfusion. The nomothermia group ( n =6). The mild hypothermic group ( n =6): The mild hypothermia (32±1℃) were induced after reperfusion and lasted for 12 hours. Astragalus treatment group ( n =6): The Astragalus (1 mg/kg) was injected into peritoneal cavity immediately after ischemia. The Astragalus plus mild hypothermia group ( n =6): mild hypothermia was established after reperfusion, which continued for 12 hours and was injected immediately after ischemia. The infarct volume and histologic changes were observed. Results The infact volumes were 112.41 ± 16.64 mm 3 in the astragalus plus mild hypothermic group and 146.68 ± 14.88 mm 3 in the mild hypothermic group. The infarct volume was smaller in rats treated by the Astragalus plus hypothermia than in those treated with the mild hypothermia ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion The study suggest that synergetic effect of the mild hypothermia and Astragalus should be obvious.
