To investigate the neural mechanism in the ethanol dependence, the alteration of the EEG and power spectra in rat nucleus accumbens (Nacc) on the chronic ethanol exposure and withdrawal was analysed. The animals were given the 6 % (V/V) ethanol as their water intake for 30 days, and the ethanol was replaced by tap water in the 31th day. Electrodes were implanted in the Nacc, and the EEG was recorded and analyzed in the different stages. In the rats of chronic exposure to ethanol, the alpha waves of EEG were significantly decreased, while the delta and theta waves were increased. The EEG power spectra analysis showed that the delta power was increased, while the theta power decreased. In the rats of withdrawal stage, spikes and spike slow waves were appeared in the EEG.The EEG power spectra analysis showed that the EEG frequency band had moved to the high frequency range, the delta power was decreased, but the alpha and the theta were increased. In the 9th to 10th day of the withdrawal, the EEG and their power spectra recovered to the control level. This study suggested that the alteration of EEG and power spectra could reflect the effects of chronic ethanol exposure and withdrawal on the central neurous system.
