The image-numerological scholarship on the Changes of the Han dynasty(206 BCE-220 CE)culminated in Yu Fan’s(164-233)commentary on the Changes, which was venerated by the Qing(1644-1912)scholars as the"authentic ancient Changes of the Western Han(206 BCE-9 CE)".On the basis of collecting the interpretations of Yu’s commentary by the scholars from the Qing dynasty to the period of the Republic of China(1912-1949),this paper makes a most comprehensive clarification, compilation, and analysis of Yu Fan’s scholarship on the Changes. The author began to study Yu Fan’s approach to the Changes when he was young, and had some doubts about it according to the traditional image-numerological approach. After the Mawangdui silk version of Zhouyi came out,the author found that some of Yu’s annotations to the Changes were in alignment with the silk version and inherited the contents of the Western Han(206 BCE-9 CE)or even preQin(before 221 BCE)Changes scholarship, but some were far-fetched contents derived from his contemporary image-numerological materials which were not consistent with the silk version. Therefore, the author adds a"note"to each item of collected interpretations of Yu’s commentary to illustrate the source and courses of Yu’s scholarship and further reflects on the traditional image-numerology.This paper is an analysis on the collected interpretations of Yu’s commentary on the hexagram Qian[■,The Creative,1],by which we can see the relationship between Yu’s image-numerology and Western Han or even pre-Qin Changes scholarship as well as the transformation of the style of study in the four hundred years of the Han dynasty(206 BCE-220 CE).
