The intestinal mucosa is a protective gel-liquid layer attached to epithelial cells of mammals. It is the first barrier for the host to intestinal environment. As a lubricant and physical barrier between intestinal cavity contents and intestinal epithelial cells, intestinal mucus is closely related to intestinal mechanical barrier, immune barrier and biological barrier. The disease development in critically ill patients is complex in mucous layer, intestinal digestive enzyme system and ischemia reperfusion injury. Intestinal ischemia reperfusion injury causes impaired structural and functional integrity, which enables the infiltration of digestive enzymes into intestinal lumen. Subsequently autodigestion results in gut-derived sepsis, acute lung injury and multiple organ failure. The above topic is less studied in recent decades. This paper will review the relationship between the structure of intestinal mucous layer and the associated diseases.
