What on earth is in the deepest heart of Lermontov, who plays an important role in the history of Russian literature? From Lermontov' s poems, different people may perceive different Lermontovs, but the different interpretations cannot escape the binary opposition between heaven and earth. Through the textual analysis of Lermontov' s poems, the author of this paper aims at revealing that heaven and earth, two eternal themes, form a sharp contrast, and run through Lermontov' s creation of poems. By examining the nature of the binary opposition, the author of this paper finds that Lermontov, on the one hand, was yearning for the freedom and holiness of the heaven, but, on the other hand, couldn't get out of the spiritual dilemma of the complex world in which he lived. In a certain sense, one may well say that Lermontov was an angel who came to the earth, with various feelings of melancholy and meditation due to his falling to the mortal world.
