Objective To investigate the efficacy of the combined treatment with octreotide and omeprazole for elderly patients with peptic ulcer following hemorrhage. Methods Forty-two elderly patients with peptic ulcer following hem- orrhage were treated as the observation group from January 2011 to March 2013. The contrast group were composed of 39 elderly patients with peptic ulcer following hemorrhage (contrast groupl) and 66 patients with peptic ulcer following hemorrhage whose ages were less than 60 years (contrast group2) in the same period. The patients in the observation group were treated with octreotide combined with omeprazole, while those in the contrast group were treated with omeprazole alone. The hemostasis rate and blood transfusion and the duration of hospitalization in each group was compared. Results The hemostasis rates during 72 hours were 92.9%, the average amount of blood transfusion was (485.2±34.2)mL, and the duration of hospitalization were (9.1±2.8) days in the observation group. The comparison between observation group and contrast group 1 had statistical significance(P 〈0.05). Conclusion It has better effect on treat- ment of the elderly patients with peptic ulcer following hemorrhage with the method of octreotide combining with omeprazole.
