《美之艺术家》中艺术家沃兰形象分析

摘　　要：霍桑是美国历史上的经典作家,短篇小说是其创作中重要组成部分。文章主要分析了霍桑短篇小说《美之艺术家》中主人公沃兰的形象并试图挖掘霍桑赋予他的深刻涵义。艺术家是霍桑笔下众生中一个频繁出现又比较特殊的群体,在塑造他们的同时,霍桑不可避免地联想到自己。此外,沃兰对超凡之美的追求过程向我们展示了霍桑对于人的心理需求、人与社会关系的思考以及对当时文学传统和时代背景的观照。Hawthorne＇ s short stories constitute an important part of this classical writer＇ s works. This paper analyzes the characterization of Owen Warland in Hawthorne＇ s The Artist of the Beautiful, and tries to explore its profound meanings. Owen Warland belongs to the group of the artist, which is a frequent yet special group in Hawthorne＇ s canons. Sharing a lot of similarities, Hawthorne cannot help associating this character with himself. Furthermore, by portraying the process of pursuing the beautiful, Hawthorne contemplates the relation between individual and society, human being＇ s psychological needs, literary tradition and social background in his time.
