Objective To explore the relationship between the serum folic acid level and neural tube defects and pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women. Methods 5 284 cases of pregnant women from January 2008 to June 2013 were examined at 26- 40 weeks of gestational age, and among them, 792 cases of pregnant women with adverse pregnancy outcomes and 4 492 cases of pregnant women with normal pregnancy outcomes. And 96 cases of foetuses with neural tube defects were screened as neural tube defects group while 120 normal pregnant women during the same period in our hospital were selected as the control group. The relationship between neural tube defects and maternal serum folic acid levels, pregnancy outcome were compared. Results There were no significant differences in age, gravidity number, gestational weeks and cysteine levels (P〉0.05). The folic acid level of NTDs group was significantly lower than that of the control group the level of folic acid of adverse pregnancy out- comes of pregnant women was significantly lower than that in normal pregnancy outcomes of pregnant women, and the differ ence was statistically significant (P〈0.05). Conclusion The lower level of serum folie acid may increase the risk of neural tube defects and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
