Objective To assess the association between tea consumption and the risk of cerebral hemorrhage in males. Methods A total of 76 864 male in-service employees and retirees of the Kailuan Group who participated in health examination from July 2006 to October 2007 were recruited with an average 4.03 years follow-up. According to the frequency of tea consumption, the participants were classified into 3 groups: the never (n= 50 180), occasional (n= 11 834), and regular tea-drinking groups (n = 14 850). A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to assess the association between the frequency of tea consumption and the risk of cerebral hemorrhage. Results The incidence of cerebral hemorrhage (per 1000 person-years) was 1.41 (286/202 137), 0.61 (29/47 703) , and 0.90 (54/60 163} in the never, occasional, and regular tea-drinking groups, the differences being statistically significant (P〈0. 01 ). After adjusting for age, blood pressures and history of hypertension, the hazard ratios of cerebral hemorrhage associated with different levels of tea consumption ]-never (reference group), occasional and regular tea-drinking] were 1.00, 0.59 (950/00 CI 0. 40-0.87), and 0.66 (95G CI 0. 49-0.88}, respectively. Conclusion Moderate consumption of tea could reduce the risk of cerebral hemorrhage in males.
