Objective To explore the expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the human meningiomas and its meanings. Methods The expressions of the IGF-1, proliferating cell nucleus antigen (PCNA) and FV Ⅲ factor related antigen (FV Ⅲ -Rag) [to determine microvascular density (MVD)] in 110 cases of human meningiomas, of which, 70 were WHO grade Ⅰ , 22 WHO grade Ⅱ, and 18 WHO grade Ⅲ, and 12 samples of normal dura mater of brain were determined by immunohistochemical technique. Results The levels of IGF-1 and PCNA expressions were significantly higher in WHO grade Ⅲ meningioma that those in WHO grade II meningiomas (P〈0.05), which were significantly higher than those in WHO grade Ⅰ meningiomas (P〈0.05), which were significantly higher than those in the normal dura mater of brain (P〈0.05). The value of MVD was significantly higher in WHO grade Ⅲ meningiomas that those in WHO grade II and I meningiomas (P〈0.05), which were significantly higher than that in the normal dura mater of brain (P〈0.05). The levels of IGF-1, PCNA and FVI-RAg (i.e. MVD) were positively related to WHO grade of the meningiomas (P〈0.05). Conclusion It is suggested that IGF-1 may be involved in the pathogenesis and development of the meningiomas.
