The translation and criticism of New Zealand literature in China started with Xu Zhimo's article Mourning Katherine Mansfield in 1923. Afterward, such celebrities as Chen Xiying, Shen Yanbing and Ling Shuhua either chose to translate Mansfield's short stories or published critical articles in newspapers and magazines, therefore promoting a boom of translating Mansfield and New Zealand literature. Before the founding of P.R.C in 1949, the translation and criticism of New Zealand literature in China mainly centered around Katherine Mansfield, which emphasized Mansfield's identity as a British writer and focused on Mansfield's achievements in short stories. When translating and criticizing New Zealand literature, some prestigious writers played a leading role, a few newspapers, magazines and publishing houses acted as the driver. Despite the existing deficiencies, the translation and criticism of New Zealand literature before 1949 became a necessary phase in the dissemination and reception of New Zealand literature, exerted a profound influence on some Chinese writers and paved a way for the subsequent reception of New Zealand literature in China.
