An Empirical Research on University English Teachers' Motivations for Participating in the "Visiting Scholar Program"

摘  要:本研究通过问卷调查的方式,对全国118所高校的182名英语教师的访学动机进行了实证研究。首先采用探索性因子分析的方法,自然析出7种动机因子,由强到弱依次为学术情境、求知兴趣、社会责任、学术关系、学术成果获取、压力缓解和竞争需要。随后我们结合对12位教师的访谈内容进一步分析了教师的访学动机特点。根据研究结果,文末提出了用人单位要为教师访学提供支持,访学单位要加强访学机制建设,促进教师多元访学动机的发展的建议。The current study sampled 182 English teachers from 118 universities/colleges in China's Mainland and em- ployed a questionnaire to investigate their motivations for participating in the "Visiting Scholar Program (VSP)". The exploratory factor analysis yielded seven types of mo- tivational factors, which were ranked from top to bottom as "academic situation", "intrinsic interest", "social re- sponsibility" ," academic circle construction", "academic achievements pursuit", "burn-out escaping", and "need for future career competition". Follow-up interviews on 12 of them further revealed the features of teachers' moti- vations. Based on the research findings, the writers finally proposed some suggestions that universities should sup- port teachers' further education; and the universities run- ning the VSPs should improve the quality of VSPs to en- hance teachers' multiple motivations for participating in VSP.
