The writings of the Beat Generation had profound influence on the American culture in the second half of the 20 th century. However, the meaning and translation of the word "Beat"has long confused researchers. From the angle of the formation and transmission of literary canon the present paper seeks to elucidate the legitimacy of translating "Beat" into "Kuadiao"(collapse in Chinese. The Beat Generation advocates spontaneous writing to break down the boundary between literature and real life. The Beat poets read poems publicly to close the gap between the writer and the reader. Frequent interaction between the Beat Generation and the Media has caused the collapse of the boundary between elite culture and popular culture, thus changing the role o the writer and the way literature influences society. Breaking down boundaries is one of the majo features of post-modern culture, by which the Beat Generation attempts to liberate literature which tends to over-specialize itself.
