Previous research has demonstrated that repetition priming effect can be regulated by pre-existing representation, however, litde is known about the modulation of emotional valence with this factor on such an effect. To address this issue, 720 Chinese twoword characters were subdivided into positive, neutral and negative valence groups. One half of the characters were kept as the normal order and the others were reversed. The items sandwiched between the 1 st and the 2nd presentation of the same character was either 0 or 4. The task was to decide whether each stimulus was normal or not. The results showed that the effects of pre-existing representation, ernotional valence and lag interacted with that of repetition. The repetition priming effect was greater for re- versed characters. The repetition priming effect was greater in the shorter lag case, and the influence of lag interacted with that of emotional valence. Together, these results indicate that the repetition priming effect in Chinese two-word characters with different valences under various lag support the perspective of bottom-up processing, and the regulation of valence supports the theory of attention narrowing.
