Previous literature has revealed that parental involvement have significant effects on children's academic achievement and social development. The important role of parental involvement in children's learning has been recognized by academics, educators, parents, and policy makers. In fact, increasing numbers of researchers and research institutes have targeted parental involvement as the major means and protective factor to promote academic achievement of children at risk. Identifying the predictors of parental involvement is the key to better understand the determinants of parental involvement and thus researchers can effectively foster it through parenting intervention programs. The present study has explored the predicting effects of family social economic status and parents' psychological factors on parental involvement within Chinese population and the differential relationships in families with daughters and families with sons. The results demonstrated that parents' educational level could significantly predicted parental involvement within girl families and boy families, while working hours could only negatively predicted parental involvement of girls but not boys. After considering sibling status and family SES, parents' psychological factors could still predict parental involvement, no matter in girl families or boy families. These results suggest that, compared to family SES, parents' psychological factors are more important in predicting parental involvement.
