Objective This work was to investigate the effect of allicin on Th1/Th2 balance after excessive exercise in rats. Methods SD rats aged 8 weeks were randomly divided into 3 groups: 1) Control (group C), 2) Training (group T), and 3) Training + Allicin (group TA). Each group was further randomly divided into two sub-groups according to the time of sampling: 1) 24 h post training (C1, T1, TA1) and 2) 72h post training (C2, T2, TA2). Rats in group T and group TA performed incremental load swimming training for 5 weeks. The rats in group TA were injected with allicin every day in the last three weeks of training session. The concentrations of serum IFN-γ, IL-4 in the circulation were measured. Results Both the concentration of serum IFN- γ (P〈0.01) and the value of IFN- γ/IL-4 (P〈0.05) in group T were significantly lower than those in group C, and the concentrations of serum IFN- γ in group TI and T2 were significantly lower than that in group Cland C2 respectively. The levels of serum IFN- γ and IFN- γ/IL-4 in group TA showed no significant difference from that in group T. Conclusion Excessive exercise induced a shift to a Th2-type response, while allicin had no significant effect on such a shift.
