The relationship between language and thought has long been a key issue in sociolinguistic study. As a novelist who has great interest in and deep insight into human language, George Orwell portrays in Nineteen Eighty-Four a dystopian country with strict control over language, and meanwhile expresses his concern over the increasing degradation of modern English. This paper, from the perspective of sociolinguistics (especially the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis), makes a systematic analysis of the totalitarian language strategy in the fictional Oceania, such as its theoretical foundation, actual operation and psychological effect. The purpose is to shed some new light on Orwell's outlook on language and politics.
