The city of Hangzhou is typical of many older Chinese cities in that it presents a rich mixture of apparently‘historic environments', some comprising largely-intact survivals from all past centuries, including the 20th, and others resulting from radical attempts at reconstruction or reshaping of key monuments, including the city's famous ‘Drum Tower'. Orthodox conservation theory draws a sharp distinction, even a polarization, between these two approaches, labeling one ‘authentic' and the other ‘false' or ‘damaging' to the heritage. But an alternative, more positive and inclusive interpretation is possible, which recognizes both approaches as equally valid, co-existing elements in the cumulative mosaic that makes up a contemporary ‘historic city'.
