Objective To assess the application of blood-oxygen functional imaging techniques in the efficacy evaluation of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients. Methods Thirty-five patients with breast cancer received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Blood-oxygen function tests were performed before confirmed diagnosis and after 4 courses of chemotherapy. The results were compared with clinical efficacy as evaluated by palpation method. Results In 35 patients, 32 cases were evaluated by blood-oxygen function tests as marked response, of which 29 cases were evaluated as marked response by palpation ( 90.6% ) ; 3 cases were evaluated by blood-oxygen function test as unmarked response, of which 2 cases were evaluated as ineffective by palpation (66.7%). Oxygen and blood values shown by blood-oxygen function tests before and after chemotherapy were significantly different ( both P 〈 0.05 ). The results of palpation and blood-oxygen function tests were correlated and consistent ( both P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion Blood-oxygen functional imaging techniques and clinical palpation are consistent and complementary in evaluating the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.
