Objective:To investigate the serum uric acid( SUA) and homocysteine( HCY) levels in pateints with multiple sclero-sis,neuromyelitis optica and healthy people, and their relations among three groups. Methods:SUA and HCY levels were determined in 68 patients with MS,96 patients with NMO,as well as 100 healthy controls. UA and HCY levels were compared among groups according to the clinical characteristics such as age, sex, type and handicapped degree. Results:The SUA levels in patients with MS and NMO were significantly lower than those in the healthy control group. The HCY levels in patients with MS were significantly higher than those in the NMO group and healthy control group. In the MS group, the HCY levels in patients with EDSS score above 3. 5 were significantly higher than those in patients with EDSS score below 3. 5. Conclusion:Low SUA level and hyperhomocysteinemia may contribute to pathological mechanism of MS. The level of HCY may be associated with the severity of MS. Low SUA level may be correlated with the pathological mechanism of NMO.
