Objective To investigate the relationship between the of cerebral IL-1β and ICAM-1 contents and the secondary brain injury (SBI) after impacted cerebral trauma in the rats. Methods The cerebral contusion was induced by free-falling in the rats. IL-1β, ICAM-1 and water contents, activities of MPO and SOD and MDA infiltration of polymorphonudear (PMN) cells in the brain tissues, and cerebral pathological changes were measured respectively by the methods of ELISA, biochemistry and pathology. Results The contents of the cerebral IL-1β, ICAM-1 and water, and activity of MDA in the injured brain were significantly higher than that in the control brain (P<0.05). The significantly decrease in the activity of SOD of the injured brain was observed in the rats with in brain injury. There were many PMN cells in the injured brain tissue and one surrounding them. Conclusions The infiltration and accumulation of PMN cells and increase in MDA of the injured brain were related to increase in the intracerebral IL-1β and ICAM-1 in the rats with brain injury. The inflammatory injury may play an important role in SBI.
