In order to develop an accurate and universal correlation for predicting the heat transfer coefficient of the supercritical water(SCW)flow near the upper generating line in an upward smooth tube with different inclined angles, the existing empirical correlations were evaluated in this paper based on the collected experimental data from literature under the working conditions without heat transfer deterioration. It is shown that the prediction error of these correlations were quite large.Considering the effects of the SCW thermal physical properties and the inclined angle of the tube on heat transfer performance in a smooth tube,a new correlation was proposed. The prediction error of this new correlation was smaller compared with the existing empirical correlations and its mean relative deviation, mean relative absolute deviation and standard deviation are 0.88%,12.80% and 16.68%,respectively and 90.06% of the data fall within the error zone of ±30%.It means that the proposed correlation can be used to predict the heat transfer coefficient of the SCW flow near the upper generating line in an inclined upward smooth tube under the working condition without heat transfer deterioration, providing a basis for the design and safe operation of supercritical pressure boilers.
