The place name of Tao River (洮河)appeared in the Pre-Qin Period, which was the western border- land of the Qin. The ancient Tibet-Burman people lived in this area, and the Tibetans call this river as Klu-chu. Klu is a native deity of Tibet, which commonly lives in the water and could induce some skin disease. The archa- ic Chinese phonology of Tao(洮) is a record of Klu, its archaic pronunciation is similar with Klu. So the place name of klu-chu has a history of more than two thousand years. Many Neolithic relics situated in the drainage ar- ea of Tao River, which are famous for the Painted Pottery. The Frog Pattern on Painted Pottery indicates the con- cept of Klu.
