The role of vitamin D in calcium-phosphorus homeostasis and bone health has been known for over a century. Over the last decade, emerging evidence has suggested that vitamin D may play a role in immune, endocrine, cardiovascular and central nervous systems. Based on the neurodevelopmental hypothesis, schizophrenia is considered as a neurodevelopmental disorder. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that vitamin D is actually a neuroactive steroid that could affect the developing brain including its effects on neurotrophic factor expression, dopamine ( DA ) neurotransmitter system, intracellular calcium signaling, regulation of reactive oxygen species and the expression of genes/proteins involved in neuronal differentiation, structure and metabolism. Early deficiencies have been linked with neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. This review provided a concise summary of the recent evidence implicating a role for vitamin D in the developing brain and its potential link with schizophrenia.
