To improve the efficiency of the single ship operation,a quantitative calculation model on minimum fuel consumption speed considering the effect of irregular wind and wave is proposed. First, the route is divided into several sailing legs and the sea state data are acquired. Then,a model of fuel consumption per hour is given using the additional running power to correct the reduction of ship speed due to irregular wind and wave. Finally,a nonlinear optimization model of minimum fuel consumption speed is proposed where the speed on each sailing leg is introduced as a decision variable. In the real ship application, the optimization algorithm of minimum fuel consumption speed is demanded to seek a global optimal solution fast,so a start value algorithm is proposed. An example application of one real voyage is given to calculate the fuel consumption and the minimum fuel consumption speed, which shows that the relative error of fuel consumption per n mile between the predicted value using the proposed method and the recorded value is in the acceptable range. In comparison with the method without considering the effect of irregular wind and wave( using average speed),the fuel consumption calculated by this method reducesby 1%,and the energy saving effect is achieved.
