Objective: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGF-A) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC). Methods: The clinical pathological data of 45 patients with ESCC, who were admitted to Guang'an People's Hospital from January 2009 to December 2010, were collected. The VEGF-A expression and micro lymphatic vessel density(MLVD) in tumor tissue were detected by immunohistochemical method. The relationship between VEGF-A expression and clinical pathological data, MLVD and survival period were analyzed. Results: The VEGF-A positive expression rate(66.67%) of patients with lymph node metastasis was significantly higher than that(38.10%) of patients without lymph node metastasis(P〈0.05). The MLVD(8.35 ±2.45) in patients with VEGF-A positive expression was significantly higher than that(5.32 ±1.44) of patients with VEGF-A negative expression(P〈0.05). The 3-year survival rate(41.67%) of patients with VEGF-A positive expression was significantly lower than that(61.90%) of patients with VEGF-A negative expression(P〈0.05). Conclusion: VEGF-A expression has an application value in determining lymph node metastasis in patients with early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, which could be used as an effective indicator of prognosis.
