Tumor microenvironment is a key factor of the process of tumor growth and metastasis, exosomes are able to be involved in the regulation of tumor microenvironment through a variety of ways. Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles bodies, released by a diverse range of living cells, and widely distributed in the peripheral blood, saliva, urine, ascites, pleural effusion, milk, and other body fluids. Exosomes contain a broad array of biologically active materials including functional protein, mRNA, miRNA, DNA fragments, etc. These bioactives can be shuttled between cells and mediate the materials transport and information exchange between cells, thereby affecting the physiological function of cells. Emerging evidence indicates that tumor cell-derived exosomes play a key role in the regulation of tumor microenvironment tumor cell-derived exosomes can promote tumor angiogenesis, induce the differentiation of tumor-associated fibroblasts and participate in the immune regulation of tumor microenvironment and the regulation of tumor premetastasis microenvironment, thereby playing an important role in tumor progression. In addition, exosomes also play an important role in tumor hypoxic microenvironment. This article reviews the role of tumor cell-derived exosomes in the regulation of tumor microenvironment and tumor progression.
