There are a large number of onomatopoeia in Chinese and Japanese languages. The Chinese onomatopoeia has no unified classification, and the Japanese onomatopoeia belongs to adverbs. This paper compared semantic functions from phonetic features, morphological classification and syntactic function of onomatopoeia in Chinese and Japanese. It can be seen that the pronunciations of Chinese and Japanese onomatopoeia have something related to meanings in phonetic features; both are sometimes able to express the same sound effect; there are same types of onomatopoeia words in Chinese and Japanese in morphological classification; onomatopoeia words in Chinese and Japanese have rich syntactic functions on the whole, but the Japanese onomatopoeia can't be used as a complement. Through the comparison in semantic functions can we better understand the similarities and differences between Chinese and Japanese onomatopoeia.
