Objective To determine wether the combination of vitamin D and L-dopa reduces the risk of falls in vascular Parkinsonism(VP).(MCAO) in rats. Method Forty-eight patients with VP were divided into vitamin D group(24 cases) and control group(24 cases). All patients were treated with L-dopa, the patients in the vitamin D group received 1000 IU ergocalciferol daily, but control group did not received. The number of falls were compared between the two groups during following 2 years. Results Improved muscle strength of lower extremities was observed in the vitamin D group. There was significant difference between the two groups in the number of falls per subject during the 2 years(1.5±0.4 in the control group and 0.6±0.3 in the vitamin D group, P〈0.05). Hip fractures occurred in 3 of 23 in the control group and one of 23 in the vitamin D group during the 2-year study period. Conclusion These results suggest that the combination of vitamin D and L-dopa decreases falls in VP.
