The apoplast pathway that solutes(K^+, Na^+, sugar, etc.) transport between plant cells is an important transport route through the plant, it usually needs the cooperation between the efflux and absorption transporters. The sugar efflux transporter(SWEETs Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporters) can selectively absorb different kinds of sugar substrate, and they play important roles in plant physiological activities and development process, so they had attracted much attention in recent years. Research has discovered that: the plant SWEET transporter protein have seven transmembrane domains; SWEETs play role in the process of sucrose outflow from leaves, and can facilitate the sugar substances diffusion across the membranes down a concentration gradient.SWEETs could also be hijacked by pathogens during their infection of plants to support their development;SWEETs also involve in the nectarial secretion that could promote pollination, they also involve in pollen development and pollen tube growth, provide symbionts for mycorrhizal, and so on. In-depth study on the function and structure of SWEETs protein will link the growth and development of plants with basal metabolism organically together.
