礼貌原则在个人陈述中应用的跨文化对比研究

摘　　要：个人陈述对于留学申请者来说是非常重要的文书材料,能帮助他们在申请时从众多竞争者中脱颖而出。为分析该体裁的语言差异,使用Brown和Levinson的礼貌原则,比较30篇中国学生和20篇英语母语使用者写的个人陈述。结果表明英语母语使用者更倾向使用消极礼貌策略,使文章显得更加客观谦虚,而中国学生更多使用直接,甚至过于积极的表达。最后为师生提供建议,以促更高效的写作教学,和更全面的跨文化差异理解。Personal statement is a vital document in application process for applicants in helping and distinguishing them from the pool of rivals. In this study, Brown and Levinson＇s Politeness Strategies was applied to analyze the linguistic differences be- tween 30 Chinese personal statements and 20 native English speakers＇personal statements. The results indicate that native Eng- lish speakers prefer negative politeness strategies, which leads their personal statements more indirect and modest while Chinese counterparts tend to use more direct and aggressive expressions. Finally, the study concludes with suggestions for language teachers and candidates to write personal statement more effectively to understand cross - cultural variation more comprehensive- ly.
