摘　　要：现代大学进入国人的视野,与救亡图存的局势密切相关,而国人对于现代大学的理解,则经历了"作育专才"说、"研究高深学问"说和"造文明"说三个阶段的递进。胡适在这一递进中,堪称"造文明"说的先驱。他的"兴大学,造文明"之梦生发于留学时期,实践于归国以后。这一努力虽然历经各种困难和挫折,有时胡适也不免有沮丧之感,但总体上还是应之以他"不可救药的乐观主义"。胡适的现代大学梦最终重挫于内战,然其诉诸"造文明"的大学理想,不啻为中国近代大学史上的重要遗产,对当代建设世界一流大学也提供了重要启示。Modern university moved into the vision of Chinese people,which was closely related to national survival.Chinese people＇s understanding of modern uiversity has gooe through three stages, including ＂ foster taleets＂ research higher learning＂ and ＂create civilizations＂. Hu Shi can be called the pioneer of the proposition of ＂ create civilizations＂ in the process. Hu Shi’s dreamof ＂ develop universities and create civilizations＂ began in the period of study abroad and was put into practice after returning home. Though Hu Shi experienced various difficulties and setbacks, feeling depressed sometimes, it overall accorded with his ＂ incurable optimism＂. Hu Shi＇s dreamof modern university finallyshattered in the civil war, however the dream of ＂create civilizations＂ has been an important legacy in the history of Chinese modern university,which can provide significant revelation for constructing world - class university nowadays.
