Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary habits and life styles on the metabolic syndrome in the middle-aged college workers. Methods A non-matched case-control study was conducted. All subjects participated in a questionnaire survey on dietary and lifestyle characteristics. T test, E2 test and unconditional logistic regression analysis were used for the evaluation of relevant factors. Results The unconditional logistic single analysis showed that 10 factors were probably associated with MS. The unconditional logistic multivariate analysis indicated that male (OR= 8.51), family history of hypertension (OR=3.55), non-quantitative diet (OR=3.27), the daily intake of salted vegetables (OR= 3.81) were the risk factors. Conclusion Because the high risk of being MS, middle-aged men with family history of hypertension, working in this college, should be significantly monitored. Unreasonable eating habits and lifestyle increase the risk of MS. To reduce the incidence of MS, nutritional education should be actively carried out.
