摘　　要：美国女作家伊迪丝·华顿的心理现实主义小说《纯真年代》,揭示了19世纪末20世纪初,纽约上流社会强大而保守的文化与习俗对新思想、新行为的封杀与束缚。现代社会个体自由在现实中仍然是稀缺的,小说的主人公可以说是时代与环境的牺牲品,他们对内在自由的选择则突出了个人自由的价值。American female writer Edith Waton＇s psychological realism novel The Age of Innocence reveals how the conservative culture and customs of New York upper class society, restrained and forced out the new ideas and behaviors at the end of nineteenth Century and early twentieth Century. The individual freedom in modern society is still scarce in reality, the hero of the novel can be said to be the victim of the times and the environment. Their choice of inner freedom highlights the value of individual freedom.
