Conspicuous consumption is a kind of consumer behavior with people ' s aim to attract others ’ attention and show them off. Few study examined the role of internal and external factors on conspicuous consumption, so this study try to investigate the effects of external (social exclusion) and internal psychological factor (materialism) on conspicuous consumption. 255 college students completed the social exclusion, materialism and conspicuous consumption questionnaires. The results showed that: (1) boys receive more social rejection than that of girls the only child, s materialism and conspicuous consumption are higher than the that of non - only child freshman, s materialism and conspicuous consumption are significantly lower than that of other grades the higher the disposable income, the higher the materialism and conspicuous consumption (2) social exclusion and materialism can posi-tively predict conspicuous consumption (3 ) materialism partially mediates the relations between social exclusion and conspicuous consumption. These results suggested that as the college students received more social exclusion, they would hold stronger materialistic values and more easily show conspicuous consumption behavior.
