The total of the modem long-length novels banned by related administra- tions of Kuomintang Government was 41 ,from Jiang Guangci's The Last Smile in March 1929 to Zhang Ziping's Taili in October 1948 ,accounting for about 11.84% of the total of modem long-length novels, involving 27 authors. Among the novels mentioned above ,2 no- vels are banned due to the ensigcbensigidentity( involving the one banned twice ). 17 no- vels were stopped publication when first banned. 3 novels were stopped publication when twice banned. 2 novels changed their titles to be published when banned. 4 novels changed their publishing houses. 5 novels changed both their titles and publishing houses. 2 novels were pirated. 6 novels were still published in spite of the bans. Including "Proletarian Lit- erature" "Breaking Censorship" "Inappropriateness" "Breaking Good Customs", the pub- lic banning reasons proclaimed by Kuomintang were absurd, some of which were misno- mers, and some of which were exaggerated or fabricated. The situations of the banned no- vels were different from one to another. Some of the novels were banned due to the novel itself, some were banned on account of the literary group, and some were banned because of the author. Plus, the effects of bans also vary. Some of the novels were stopped publica- tion when first banned, some were stopped publication when banned twice, some were still published despite the bans, some were promoted, and some were left aside. All in all, the overall banning effect was not ideal.
