摘 要:本文以海丝特的人生历程"罪-罚-赎"为主线,从概念隐喻视角解读海丝特人物形象。研究表明:霍桑首先通过一系列微喻构建"罪是物体"的博喻描写海丝特的"罪";其次借助"红字""邢台""圈""链子""迷宫""荒野"等意象以及"人是物体""言语是物体"概念隐喻描述海丝特的"罚";最后以"救赎是珠儿""救赎是红字"概念隐喻呈现出海丝特的"赎"。可见,隐喻意象的运用在海丝特形象的塑造和刻画上起到重要作用。Based on Hester's life experience (from committing a sin to suffering punishment to winning self-redemption), this paper analyzes her special image from the perspective of conceptual metaphor. The study shows that Hawthorne firstly constructs a megu-metaphor "sin is an object", which contains a set of micro-metaphors, to depict Hester's sin. Then he utilizes the images of "scarlet letter, scaffold, chain/link... " and two metaphors "people are inanimate objects" and "language is an object" to por- tray Hester's punishment. Finally, he presents Hester's self-redemption by employing another two metaphors: "redemption is pearl" and "redemption is the scarlet letter". It is not hard to see that metaphorical images play crucial roles in The Scarlet Letter, especially in the characterization of Hester.
