Objective To explore the association between smoking and drinking with clinical characteristics and progno-sis in male patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Methods The clinical data and follow up information in 479 male patients with HCC receiving the liver radical therapy in the hepatobiliary department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi ′an Jiaotong University during 2002—2012 were retrospectively analyzed. Results Smoking was closely correlated with tumor size and preop erative serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase(GGT) level, while drinker was closely correlated with preoperative serum alanine transaminase(ALT) and GGT levels, the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The amount of smoking and drinking had a certain dose dependent trend with above parameters, and had the significant correlation(P<0.05).Smoking and drinking synergistically increased preoperative serum GGT level, but did not significantly affect the postoperative total survival rate in HCC patients(P>0.05).Conclusion Smoking and drinking may be correlated with the tumor size and liver function in male HCC pa-tients,but without affecting the patient′s prognosis.
