In her fourth novel The Bell, Iris Murdoch provides a literary representation of her moral philosophy which is aimed at bridging between the metaphysical extreme and the empiricist extreme of morality. Life experiment in Imber Court, an intermediary living between life in Imber Abbey and that in London, embodies Murdoch's attempt to combine the two extremes of morality. The criticism of people of convention and people of neurosis and the thick description of those who initiates their spiritual changes while keeping to their duties show Murdoch's emphasis on the importance in balancing the two extremes.
